Educational Purpose

On the philosophical foundation of Christian holistic education, Department of Convergence Science integrates different scientific areas such as chemistry, life science, animal biotechnology, animal resource science, and computer & mechatronics engineering. By integrating the cutting edge technologies of each academic field, such as IT, BT, and NT, with green bio industrial technology, the department fosters to cultivate future-oriented convergence science experts who will serve the local communities, as well as the country and lead out the health and welfare of humanity in the 21st century.
The objectives of the Department of Convergence Science are as follows.

  • To train researchers, educators, and leaders of natural science through research and development based on basic knowledge of advanced science.
  • To cultivate research capabilities and enhance the ability to utilize research products academically, industrially, and economically, as well as, develop original technologies and secure intellectual property rights.
  • To develop the creativity and originality necessary for the research and development of advanced biotechnology, and to cultivate the ability to collect, analyze, interpret, and synthesize data for this purpose.
  • To foster convergence science experts who can lead future industries by converging advanced technologies related to IT, BT, and NT demanded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Smart Hybrid Nano-Materials Lab.
  • Research field
    The research goal of SHNM Lab is to develop smart hybrid nano-materials that can be applied in the bio/energy fields. Our current research focuses on:
    • functional nano-materials (organic/polymer/ceramic hybrid materials)
    • physical properties (optics, photonics, and electronics) and
    • efficient next generation devices (semiconductor, sensor, energy, artificial intelligence, and so on.)

BioScience Research Institute(Chromosome Research Institute), Genetics Lab.
  • Research field
    Cytogenomics research is underway based on chromosome and genome sequence analysis, and research is conducted to identify repetitive sequences in the genome to identify its characteristics and to reveal the distribution and location on thechromosome by FISH technique. These research results have been published in world-class SCI journals such as Nature Communication, the plant Journal, Plant Biotechnology journal, Scientific Reports, and Frontiers. Has won numerous awards, including the Outstanding Paper Award, Best Paper Award, and Best Paper Award in Science and Technology. Graduates who earned their doctoral degrees in the lab are working as professors at Loma Linda University in the US and Sahmyook University in Korea.

Plant Cell Laboratory
  • Research field
    Based on the cytogenetic research method, this laboratory conducts various fundamental and applied research on a wide range of plants (floricultural crops, agronomic crops, medicinal crops, etc.). Currently, we are focused on
    • physical mapping through chromosome analysis for the genome sequencing project;
    • construction of plant chromosome database (www.plantchromsoome.co.kr); and
    • production of high-valued new succulents and genetic analysis through mutational breeding

Big Data Processing Lab.
  • Research field
    We study various issues in efficient processing of big data. Our current research focuses on processing of social big data: collecting SNS feeds and blog reviews, filtering noisy reviews irrelevant with a given keyword, morphological analysis needed to extract keywords, building summary information, and so on. To implement these, we study various techniques including:
    • Big data processing platforms to store and query social reviews efficiently,
    • Machine learning techniques to filter irrelevant reviews and extract keywords properly,
    • Query processing techniques such as skyline queries, continuous queries, and others.
